Video2X vs Topaz: Which One Should You Use?
The same job from two very different starting points — a browser tab, or a desktop install and a graphics card.
Topaz Labs has done this since 2005 and is the reference point in this category. The real difference is not quality — it is what you need before you can start.
A note on names first: Topaz Video AI was discontinued in September 2025, with v7.1.5 as the final legacy build, and replaced by Topaz Video. If you are reading an older comparison, it describes a product you can no longer buy.
What Video2X removes from the process. Every row in the top half of that table is a step you do not take. No download, no install, no driver check, no GPU requirement, no operating-system exclusion, no preset research before your first render, and no version to keep current. Upload a clip, pick a mode, and Video2X returns a finished file — on a Chromebook, a work laptop with locked-down software installation, or a six-year-old MacBook, with the same result and the same render time as on a workstation. That is the whole proposition: the barrier between having footage and having a better version of it is one browser tab.
Where Topaz is stronger. Nineteen-plus specialised models against seven modes is a real gap, and Starlight in particular was built for badly degraded archival footage that a general model will not match. The Premiere panel saves a round trip if you edit there. And because Topaz renders locally, your footage never leaves your machine — which matters for anything confidential, and is something a hosted service cannot offer. Three million users over two decades is a track record Video2X does not have.
The short version. If you have a capable machine, render regularly, and want the deepest model set available, Topaz is the stronger tool. If you want a finished file without installing, configuring, or qualifying your hardware first, that is what Video2X is for.
